He was captain of the Titanic. The quote was uttered 5 years before he captained the most famous ship wreck in history. When he uttered the quote he was 57 years old, a seasoned veteran of maritime life. The first battle of ironclads occured when he was a teenager and his life saw the paradigm shift from ships powered by wind to those powered by steam and coal. But mostly the quote is about being careful what you wish for.
