Brooklyn South

Brooklyn South

Brooklyn South is an American ensemble police drama series that aired on CBS for one season from September 22, 1997, to April 27, 1998. It was aired during the 1997–98 television season. The series was co-created by Steven Bochco, Bill Clark, David Milch and William M. Finkelstein. The series attempted to create a setting of a gritty, realistic police station similar to NYPD Blue, but focusing on the uniformed police officers rather than the detectives. The pilot was noted as the first TV-MA rated episode on broadcast television (or rather, TV-M as the rating was displayed during the time), making it the first time a show on CBS would receive a TV-MA rating.

Reverend Basil Matheson:
Sergeant Santoro, were you in that roll call room when Dashawn Hopkins expired?

Sgt. Richard Santoro:
In what capacity are you asking that question, Reverend?

Reverend Basil Matheson:
In my capacity as an African American community leader.

Sgt. Richard Santoro:
Well, until I've been notified to the contrary Reverend, the investigation into this morning's events is not to be conducted by community leaders.

Mavis Hopkins:
[livid] Well, maybe that's the problem since you honkeys killed my brother!

Reverend Basil Matheson:
Look, I'll tell you something, Sergeant. Regardless of who was conducting the investigation, if the African American community is not afforded access then we ALL will have a problem.

Sgt. Richard Santoro:
Now you told me.

Reverend Basil Matheson:
I'll tell you something else. If Dashawn Hopkins had to be killed in order to stop him from killing more white people, then we are prepared to accept that. On the other hand, if Dashawn Hopkins was killed subsequently and unnecessarily... and while in police custody, then we intend to see his killer or killers punished.

Sgt. Richard Santoro:
Now you told me that.

Reverend Basil Matheson:
I don't like your attitude, Sergeant.

Sgt. Richard Santoro:
Dashawn Hopkins murdered cops today, Reverend. I do not like you coming in here suggesting that cops murdered him!

Reverend Basil Matheson:
You're making a bad start of this.

Sgt. Richard Santoro:
The bad start was at seven o'clock this morning.

Mavis Hopkins:
Not nearly enough time to when you white pigs butchered him!

Reverend Basil Matheson:
We'll find out if that happened, Miss Hopkins. We have time and patience... and we will be back.
