The Silver Chair

The Silver Chair is a children's fantasy novel by C. S. Lewis, published by Geoffrey Bles in 1953. It was the fourth published of seven novels in The Chronicles of Narnia (1950–1956); it is volume six in recent editions, which are sequenced according to Narnian history. Like the others, it was illustrated by Pauline Baynes and her work has been retained in many later editions. The novel is set primarily in the world of Narnia, decades after The Voyage of the Dawn Treader there but less than a year later in England. King Caspian X is now an old man, but his son and only heir, Prince Rilian, is missing. Aslan the lion sends two children from England to Narnia on a mission to resolve the mystery: Eustace Scrubb, from The Voyage of the Dawn Treader, and his classmate, Jill Pole. In the frame story, Eustace and Jill are students at a horrible boarding school, Experiment House. The Silver Chair is dedicated to Nicholas Hardie, the son of Colin Hardie, a member of the Inklings with Lewis. Macmillan US published an American edition within the calendar year. The Silver Chair was adapted and filmed as a BBC television series of six episodes in 1990.

Puddleglum:
Not a man! Not a frog! A Marshwiggle!

Puddleglum:
Suppose... suppose we have only dreamed and made up these things like sun, sky, stars, and moon, and Aslan himself. In that case, it seems to me that the made-up things are a good deal better than the real ones. And if this black pits of a kingdom is the best you can make, then it's a poor world. And we four can make a dream world to lick your real one hollow.

Green Lady:
How dare you threaten me!

Puddleglum:
As for me, I shall live like a Narnian even if there isn't any Narnia. So thank you very much for supper. We're going to leave your court at once and make our way across your great darkness to search for our land above!

Puddleglum:
What's food for wiggles may be poison for humans, I shouldn't wonder.

Puddleglum:
We must be merry and bright. You two youngsters aren't always in high spirits you know, you must watch me. I'll be ever so merry. [attempts to grin] Merry and frolicsome. [jumps half-heartedly] They think I'm a funny fellow already in there.

Eustace Clarence Scrubb:
Oh no. [Puddleglum smiles and waves, ghastly in character] He's being merry and bright. You go and do your act.

Jill Pole:
Oh your Majesty, you're not going away are you? You will be back soon?

Jill Pole:
That Marchwiggle may be a wet blanket, but he certainly has plenty of pluck...

Eustace Clarence Scrubb:
And Cheek!

Green Lady:
[greeting the children in the northern wastes] Good morning, t-r-r-r-ravellers! Some of you are young pilgrims to be wandering in this rough land. What do you hear, what do you say?

Jill Pole:
[babbling idiotically] Oh you're such a beautiful lady and what a beautiful horse! We're looking for Prince Rilian because he's been enchanted and we've got to follow the signs because Aslan told us to and [stops short]

Puddleglum:
[kicking Jill] Beg y'pardon, ma'am. But we don't know you, or your creepy silent friend, and you don't know us. And if you don't mind we'd rather keep it that way. Shall we have some rain, do you think?

Green Lady:
[sprinkling magic powder on the fire] All of you are getting sleepy now, real sleepy. And you never heard of Aslan, see?
