The Inn of the Sixth Happiness

The Inn of the Sixth Happiness is a 1958 DeLuxe Color 20th Century Fox CinemaScope film based on the true story of Gladys Aylward, a tenacious British maid, who became a missionary in China during the tumultuous years leading up to the Second World War. Directed by Mark Robson, who received a nomination for the Academy Award for Best Director, the film stars Ingrid Bergman as Aylward and Curt Jürgens as her love interest, Captain Lin Nan, a Chinese officer with a Dutch father. Robert Donat, who played the mandarin of the town in which Aylward lived, died before the film was released. The musical score was composed and conducted by Malcolm Arnold. The cinematography was by Freddie Young. The film was shot in Snowdonia, North Wales. Most of the children in the film were Chinese children from Liverpool, home to one of the oldest Chinese communities in Europe.

My name is Gladys Aylward. I've written to the head of the missionary society. His reply stated that he'd see me if I ever came to London. If he's busy, I can wait.

Dr. Robinson, do you remember me? My name used to be Gladys Aylward.

Dr. Robinson:
Yes, I remember you. Gladys Aylward, who wasn't qualified to come to China. Will you come with us to our children's village? I can think of no one who would be more valuable.

Jen-Ai:
Thank you, but I'm going back to Yang Cheng. I'm going home.

Capt. Lin Nan:
[after Jen-ai adopts a baby girl] Don't you see how stupid and pointless this is? What are you going to do with her?

Jen-Ai:
Call her Six-Pence I think. Do you like it?

Capt. Lin Nan:
I said what are you going to do with her? What do you know about babies?

Jen-Ai:
What is there to know? When they're dirty you wash them, when they're hungry you feed them.

Gladys Aylward:
You're confusing me.

The Mandarin:
Many people are confused these days.

The Mandarin:
What is a foreigner Captain? How would you describe yourself?

Capt. Lin Nan:
My heart and my mind are Chinese, only my blood is mixed.

The Mandarin:
If I have offended a guest in my home, I shall not forgive myself.

Capt. Lin Nan:
It is my own mixed blood which offends me.

Capt. Lin Nan:
It's an interesting problem. I shall be happy to hear when you have solved it.

The Mandarin:
[after a moment's thought] Then be happy Captain, I just solved it!

The Mandarin:
[without emotion] I'm delighted.

Jen-Ai:
I like China the way it is.

Capt. Lin Nan:
Filthy? Ignorant? Backward?

Jen-Ai:
No, but if your house is dirty you can clean it.

Gladys Aylward:
[handing a Chinese girl to her father] Here, the next time you want her feet bound, bind them yourself, not the woman, and you listen to her screams.

Gladys Aylward:
You have to interfere with what you feel is wrong, if you hope to make it right.
