License to Drive

The brief 1980s mania surrounding "the Coreys" peaked with License to Drive, a modest but surprisingly still enjoyable adventure comedy. Les (Corey Haim, Lucas) has a chance to date his dream girl, Mercedes (Heather Graham, Boogie Nights, in her first significant movie role)--but he's just failed his driving exam. Motivated by a mixture of pride and hormones, he steals his grandfather's Cadillac and heads out on the town with Mercedes for a night that swiftly becomes an escalating series of disasters, made worse by the foolhardy antics of Les' best friend Dean (Corey Feldman, Stand by Me). Despite some egregious '80s fashion disasters (Graham gets the worst of them), License to Drive holds up surprisingly well--it's no work of genius, but it is a solidly made and entertaining teen comedy that's more coherent than most. The depiction of parent-teen relations is fairly honest and particularly well-played by Richard Masur (Risky Business) and Carol Kane (In the Soup) as the parents. The DVD includes a very funny and rambunctious audio commentary track by the screenwriter and director, as well as interviews with the grown-up Coreys. A must-have for fans of '80s nostalgia. --Bret Fetzer

Dean:
Could you take the car out of neutral? We just got passed by a street sweeper.

Mr. Anderson:

Dean:
Charles, you spasticated idiot.

Les:
No thanks Dad, I already have a Mercedes.

Mr. Anderson:
I'm making some room for the old boat. Want to help, Dean?

Dean:
I'd love to, Mr. Anderson. But I just remembered.

Dean:
I'm allergic to, uh...

Dean:
...dust and cardboard boxes.

Dean:
Les, that license in your wallet, that's not an ordinary piece of paper, that is a driver's license, and its not only a driver's license, it's an automobile license, and it's not only an automobile license, it's a license to live, a license to be free, a license to go wherever, whenever and with whomever you choose.

Dean:
If you're lucky she'll bite.

Miss Hellberg:
Stand back children, don't mess with me I'm a living time bomb.

Dean:
Les, to live in fear is not to live at all.

Dean:
Natalie! I was wondering, if you were driving 55 miles per hour and you collided with a runaway train, would it make ANY improvement on your face?

Mr. Anderson:
We had a college fund set aside for you! That's gone now! You had free room and board, two trusting parents and a social life. All gone! You had a Tv, a stereo, baseball, tennis racket, a skateboard, a bicycle - All gone! you even had sunlight and a window in your room!

Mr. Anderson:
You are damn lucky that your mother didn't go into labour tonight!

Mrs. Anderson:
Robin!

Mr. Anderson:
DAMN LUCKY!

Mrs. Anderson:
ROBIN! I AM in labour!

Les' DMV Examiner:
Buckle up Sonny, it's the real world out here!

Miss Hellberg:
Well Mr Anderson, we were able to retrieve your test results from the computer. And as I suppose you already know, you failed! God Giveth! And the DNV take this away! We can make your life a living hell!

Charles:
We're going to be locked up with men who murdered, and raped, and robbed convenience stores!

Dean:
Get the juicehead to pull over!

Les:
Not too bad for a kid without his license, huh?

Dean:
Wow, did you ever think in your life you would see a Mercedes fit in inside the trunk of a Cadillac?
