My name is Johnny Wowk also known as "Johnny The Walker" from the greater Boston area. My father passed away from end stage renal disease at an early age and passed it on to me and my older brother Joe, we are both on dialysis. When both my kidneys failed in July of 2000 I said I would walk the distance of around the world in memory of my father and promote kidney disease awareness. Five years later I received a transplant at Mass General making me stronger and could walk further. When I reached the distance of around the world everyone told me not to stop and keep walking and I did, but years of walking have taken its toll. I have peroneal neuropathy in both legs, both knees are beat, can't kneel down on knees, very painful and can't get up unless I grab something and pull myself up. Kidney anti rejection medications causing side effects. If I stop walking my legs start to get stiff and start to hurt. Doctors orders - keep on walking. So I continue walking each day wondering how far I can go.
