If the doors were breached, the rioters would have immediate access to the House Chambers, the actions of the officer in this case potentially saved Members and staff from serious injury and possible death from a large crowd of rioters who forced their way into the U.S. Capitol and to the House Chamber where Members and staff were steps away.
Without being aware of an officer’s emergency, the Department does not dispatch additional units or resources for an officer in distress. And if the on-duty Watch Commander is not notified of emergency identifier activations, they cannot respond to a situation.
Anyone who does not follow the rules will be asked to wear a mask or leave the premises, the Department’s requirement for officers to wear masks is for their health and safety.
