Christopher Magnus (born October 26, 1960) is the police chief of Tucson, Arizona, United States. He was previously chief of police in Fargo, North Dakota, and in Richmond, California, where a photograph of him holding a Black Lives Matter sign was widely circulated. He is an advocate of community policing. On June 24, 2020, Chief Magnus offered his resignation to Tucson Mayor Regina Romero, the City Manager and Tucson City Council. This was due to the death of a civilian while in the custody of Tucson Police. Three officers resigned just before they were to be terminated. The incident occurred in April, but was not made public until June 22, 2020 when officer's body cameras were released to news media. He is an advocate of Sanctuary cities and states and has taken activist positions on unequal application of laws based on race. In April 2021, Magnus was nominated by Joe Biden to become the U.S. Customs and Border Protection Director
