On paper it's a step in the right direction. It's tough to just assess a single tournament. I have to put a lot of things in perspective for the last-four, five weeks since the clay season, coming into this part of the year, I was losing a few first-round matches, matches that I wanted to be winning. But to have had the victories I have had... obviously moving a step in the right direction. But today was not one of those steps.

I don't expect extremely long rallies against an opponent like that, but sometimes it's not what it takes to win a match, and I think you have to kind of take care of your service games, and I have to serve better than I have been and take care of the return.

I haven't set a time table for Maria Sharapova, but I've always said that I would do it on my own terms... i'd love to play in another Olympics, but I don't know if that will happen and at this point in 2018, I don't really want to know. I want to keep going and I want to keep working and see where that takes me.

When you've experienced grand slam victories, it's absolutely natural to have that goal in your mind, it would be silly for me to say my goal for this year is to win a lower-tier tournament because I strive to be on the big stage and to win on the big stage.

Yes, you're rusty and you're trying to get the rhythm again, it's my first match in a while, but this is what I've done for so long, and when you're in the moment, you try to block everything out, and you compete. And I'm a competitor by nature, even when things are not working. That's what I do.

It's obviously always frustrating, i mean, it's motivating. It's motivating because she's at a different level. She makes you go back to the drawing board, not just for me, but for many other players. She makes you work. That's inspiring.

I faced Svitolina last year in Beijing for the first time. She's a young girl that's already in the top 30 with a tremendous amount of potential and someone that you'll be seeing in the top very soon, she has a good game, an all-around player. It'll be a tough matchup, but one that I look forward to actually.

It certainly felt good to start, after not playing a match for a couple of months. Despite all the training, it's such a different feeling to go out on the court and play in front of a crowd, you always want to apply the things you work on little by little into match atmosphere. I think I did that quite well. I wanted to start off sharp and try to do the right things.
