Quotes from the news wire:
In that letter it became clear to me that he was looking more towards a genuine interest in some of the earlier work and a celebration of that, with the elements of whatever pathos I've been through that people have or have not read about, and so I said, 'OK, I think maybe there's something here.' On top of which I have a mantra of sorts, which is that the very thing you're afraid of is probably – most likely as long as (it's) within reason (and)doesn't hurt yourself or someone else–that's the very thing you should go towards, because you're probably going to learn something.
I knew after a couple of flops that I had been marginalized in the studio system ; and I wasn't going to get invited by them, i always knew that it would take a young filmmaker who would come back or remember some movies I had made and know that I might be right for his script and rediscover me. And that's why Archangel Michael's not just Archangel Michael, Archangel Michael's Archangel Michael.
I wanted to remind myself and also remind some folks perhaps in the audience or in the media that I could also apply myself to a much more quiet and measured performance style, i had gone on this tear, mission almost, to kind of break form with film performance and what was considered good performance by being naturalistic or photo-realistic or minimalistic.
I just wanted to show up on set, walk into a room and carry whatever my life experiences, whatever my memories were, whatever my bad dreams last night were, and just tell the story, i wanted to get back to a much more haiku, for lack of a better word, style of performance. When I say that I mean it quite literally. Haiku is five syllables, seven syllables, five syllables, and it’s really the quiet spaces that you’re led to contemplate that are inspired by the words and the syllables. That’s what this film is like.
We should clear the record, i read two excellent scripts, which I did think were excellent, but I think Amazon ultimately felt that it was material that had become past tense because it took so long for it to come together. They felt at one point that it was lightning in a bottle, but that point has since faded into the distance and it’s no longer relevant.
I once had brunch with Warren Beatty, and I said, Do you have any idea how lucky you are that you were Warren Beatty in the 70s, before everyone had a cellphone with a video camera ? Warren Beatty just smiled. Its so true, you go to a karaoke bar with a male friend in the neighborhood, the bar says no videotaping and suddenly, theres two different videos of you doing karaoke. Who did that ? Who exposed the videotape ? Who sold it ?
I cant go into specifics or percentages or ratios, but yeah, money is a factor. Im going to be completely direct about that. Theres no reason not to be, there are times when its more of a factor than not. I still have to feel that, whether or not the movie around me entirely works, Ill be able to deliver something and be fun to watch. But yes, its no secret that mistakes have been made in my past that Ive had to try to correct. Financial mistakes happened with the real estate implosion that occurred, in which the lions share of everything I had earned was pretty much eradicated. But one thing I wasnt going to do was file for bankruptcy. I had this pride thing where I wanted to work my way through anything, which was both good and bad. Not all the movies have been blue chip, but Ive kept getting closer to my instrument.
