I've always believed in education and in good teaching that is guided by truth. But after a lifetime of educational pursuit, I now ask, what is true education and who decides on what is good teaching? This search has taken me through the spiritual, the delusional, social, physical, the psychological, the philosophical -- and back again. And I have made the most important educational discovery of my career, the most important discovery of my whole life: It is only through kindness that any true lesson can be taught and that I'm only here to help my students find that kindness. They are all my education, they are all my good teaching, they are my truth, they are my kindness.
Everyone dreams, but not all equally. Those who dream at night in the misty recesses of their mind, often wake to find that it was unfulfilled passion: but day dreamers are dangerous folk, for they may open their eyes, to make dreams possible.
A school cannot exist as a permanent form of education. It can only exist until the student discovers that they can learn more themselves from the real world. From that moment on the majority always look for the most promising place the highest wisdom outside of school, with the result of schooling always collapsing over lifes education.
All the perplexities, confusion and distress in education these days arises, not from defects in the students,teachers or schools, not from want of equipment or technology, but from the downright ignorance of the nature of honor, virtue and kindness. Sound education... thrives on honesty, on honor, on the sacredness of obligations, on faithful protection of childhood, on unselfish performance of teachers and on accountability and reliability.
Constant learning is the dream of the wise; stupidity however is the history of mankind. I am sure that one day the younger generation will be ready to read books again and will wonder why they didn't enjoy them before.
For me the mark of a great History teacher is the ability to take students to places outside the classroom while staying in the classroom.
I like cooking, maybe because for me it is actually quite an aggressive and controlling activity so it fits my character quite well. Moreover there is sometimes a small element of force-feeding going on after I cook, I care nothing for people who cry out NO MORE! Yes its true cooking for me is a little like going to war. It is entered into with a total abandonment of reason and a lack of safety of everyone around!

If kids come to our school from strong, healthy functioning families, it makes my job easier. If they do not come to our school from strong, healthy, functioning families, it makes my job more important.

My view is that at your age you shouldn't worry too much about losing love. If it is right, it happens, its meant to be. The main thing is not to hurry, especially when your young and new to love. Love must come to both. Know for sure that nothing good, true and real gets away when it comes to love. And if it doesn't work out (for whatever reason) also know that God is closest to those of us with broken hearts.
Since I've been in the education business - often the only way to relate to teachers, parents & children - are with words of wisdom. If I could know all the wise books by heart - I would stand a chance at being a better Headmaster. Also for when it comes to my family & friends - that knowledge would always be there to give inspiration & encouragement & tell me who can't use that with their relatives!
Tests and exams do not determine who is in the right standing. Tests and exams only determine who is left standing. However even if you are knocked down you can still rise again. How far you go in life does not depend on tests and exams but on your being tender with the young, compassionate with the old, sympathetic and tolerant with others who are not as strong as yourself.
The truth is that we are all born into this world quite ignorant, personally I like to think of my behavior in my youth as a "learning experience." I have a great many regrets, and I'm sure most everyone does. However as a Headmaster I now feel that I must protect the memory of those stupid things, so I can teach the value of them to my students. However if they don't want my advice they can always go get a "learning experience" for themselves!
What's important for me when I teach is to communicate 'to cook up' the visions, smells, tastes and sounds of the time with my young audience. Hopefully, I am imparting 'feeding them' what's important about that period of History. I want my students to taste a respect for the information 'the food' and to know about the cooks, the restaurants, and how the ingredients of time comes together to form a real banquet of History.
