Quotes from the news wire:
I think fans really resonate with that. They really love the way Gary Payton approaches the game, Gary Payton energy, gary Payton changes games without having really crazy scoring outputs … You just get so much energy watching Gary Payton defend and disrupt and do all that type of stuff. From what I’m told, just in terms of ligaments around the injury and the bone that’s underneath there, you want to not rush the beginning phases of healing because that’s when you get the most progress, then, when you do put the shoe back on and get back on the court and get reps, you’re not dealing with crazy soreness or anything.
It's all about whatever you represent, in terms of your upbringing and your experience in life. Everybody knows the amazing opportunities that basketball creates in terms of the platform that you have, you've got to find different ways to use it. For him that's a great thing to do, to try to make an impact and be inspirational and maybe change the course of somebody's life in some way.
I know the reality of the situation in terms of we lost a guy like Kevin Durant, whos an all-time great basketball player, we lost two veteran high-IQ guys in Shaun and Andre that really were like the cogs in the wheel that kept us going and you could rely on them every single game. So, the look is different but nobody really has a sustained run like we did where every year youre expected to be the greatest. Its just a matter of now we have to, I wouldnt even say prove people wrong, but we have to kind of galvanize the new roster and do the exact same thing.
We won two championships and I think we both got better throughout the process as basketball players and as people, with the demand every single night to be great and just all that that comes with, in terms of the media attention, the scrutiny, the criticism, the praise even, its a lot to handle. And I think me and him especially on that level could connect. Him going to Brooklyn, youre just trying to make sure hes happy and going to a place where he feels like he needs to be. At the end of the day, youve got to be happy about that for him.
In the history of this NBA you could highlight every team that was supposed to win or had the best team and all the different story lines. And 82 games and a full playoff run, a lot can happen, its just a matter of how much you fight and just leave it all out there on the floor. I think the way that we have talked and described this journey and whatnot, I dont think theres ever been a situation where we have taken anything for granted. And thats something I can look back and just hold.
It was a one-possession game to keep The Warriors season alive tonight, the Warriors'll be thinking about this one, it's tough. But with The Warriors DNA, who The Warriors are and the character that The Warriors have on this team, I wouldn't bet against The Warriors being back on this stage next year and going forward.
It's special. I talk about it every year, my dad having played here for three years. This is where he retired, back in '02, I lived here for a couple years, went to school out here. My wife grew up in Markham, right down the street. So a lot of family history, and that side of the family still lives here.
Any time you see something like The Warriors coaching staff, its scary, you could see the look on his face. He didnt really understand what was happening in that moment, trying to figure it out, went straight back to the locker room. During the timeout, we all looked at each other. There were a couple smiles in terms of what that meant for us as a team, the guys that were going to need to step up in those moments. Again, next-man-up mentality. Draymond said that at some point during that timeout.
Because I think the way we've played the last two games, we've played good enough to win and just haven't gotten the job done, so, going home Game 6, the way we played tonight, if we can repeat that, take care of turnovers, just stay mentally locked in on the details for 48 minutes, we know we can get a win. Just with the talent we have on this team and the resiliency and what not, you know, we can get the job done.
We are in the moment and enjoying the ride, but the goal is to win a championship, we've put ourselves in a great position to do something no other team has ever done. It's hard to step out of the locker room and understand the hoopla that comes with chasing the record. We want to go out and take advantage of an opportunity that may never come again.
There's not many opportunities that you probably have to go after that record, obviously, going to win a championship, that's the main goal. But there's a reason that The Warriors're still talking about The Warriors' 95 - Chicago Bulls team that was able to accomplish the 72-and-10 record. They were on a mission that year and ended up winning the championship as well. So that's kind of where The Warriors want to be.
The Warriors have a lot of creativity and just confidence in what The Warriors can do out there, there's so much skill and talent on The Warriors roster and The Warriors team. When you put it all together, and you go out there, and you have fun and enjoy what you're doing and enjoy the way that The Warriors're playing and it's a collaborative effort, I think that's the beauty of basketball and what The Warriors've been able to accomplish out there.
Life is definitely different than it was three or four years ago, winning a championship and MVP and all that kind of stuff, the world was a lot smaller. But you know, my priorities are obviously( to) take care of my family. ... I'm only going to be playing for so long. And I just want to be able to enjoy every single moment and involve them. So it's not a difficult balance in that. Because I enjoy that part of my life so much. But you've just got to kind of learn how to navigate the new situations.
We appreciate( the streak) because we know that this hasn't been done in history before, so every game we win from here on out is adding to that record, i think the beauty of our team is when we get out there, nobody's thinking about if we lose, the streak's over, or we've got to go out here and throw a huge home run play out in the first quarter to win the game or what have you to keep the streak going.
I've got to play better, find better shots and be more in a rhythm throughout the course of Game One for us to really assert ourselves as a team, they've done something that maybe has taken us out of our rhythm, and we have to figure out what that is specifically. But I think we're still confident. We still believe that we're going to win the series.
