Space Battleship Yamato (Japanese: ???????, Hepburn: Uch? Senkan Yamato, also called Cosmoship Yamato and Star Blazers) is a Japanese science fiction anime series created by manga artist and director Leiji Matsumoto and writer Yoshinobu Nishizaki and animated by Academy Productions and Group TAC. The series aired in Yomiuri TV from October 6, 1974 to March 30, 1975, totaling up to 26 episodes. It revolves around the character Susumu Kodai and a crew of people on Earth, tasked in going into space aboard the space warship Yamato in search for the Planet Iscandar in order to reverse the damage done to their planet after it was destroyed by the Gamilians. It is one of the most influential anime series in Japan due to its theme and story, marking a turn towards more complex serious works and influencing works such as Mobile Suit Gundam, Neon Genesis Evangelion and Super Dimension Fortress Macross as well as video games such as Space Invaders. Hideaki Anno has ranked Yamato as his favorite anime and credited it with sparking his interest in anime. Yamato was the first anime series or movie to win the Seiun Award, a feat not repeated until the film Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind (1984).

Captain Okita, this is Yukikaze, Captain Mamoru Kodai! I cannot obey your command to withdraw! I could never show my face to the friends I've lost!

Juzo Okita:
Whether you agree with it or not, the withdrawal is my order, Kodai. We're all that's left to defend the Earth. A true man bears the humiliation of today for the sake of tomorrow.

Mamoru Kodai:
I don't think so! Even if it's hopeless, we can still take our enemies with us! Isn't that what a man does?

Juzo Okita:
Kodai! Hear my order: Withdraw!

Mamoru Kodai:
I'll fight while you withdraw, Captain Okita!

Juzo Okita:
Kodai, don't say such a stupid thing!

Mamoru Kodai:
Captain Okita... we're proud to have fought with you.

Shiro Sanada:
[providing cover fire] Kodai, run! Take Yuki and save the Earth!

Juzo Okita:
Dr Sado... thank you.

Yuki Mori:
Saving Earth won't matter, nothing will matter if you're not there with me!

Susumu Kodai:
But I will be! If I save the Earth, I'll be there in every tree, flower, and blade of grass!

Narrator:
Space stretches into infinity. Countless stars die as others are born. And thus, space is alive.

Susumu Kodai:
Why are you attacking the Earth?

Desler:
[laughs] Attacking it? We are renovating it!
