The Hanging Tree

Dr. Joseph 'Doc' Frail:
Rune, this is Frenchy Plant. Never believe a word he says and never let him get behind you in the dark. [Frenchy laughs]

Tom Flaunce:
I've, uh, known Doc Frail about five years since the Banik Strike. We did a little business off and on. Doc could have had it rich and easy a half a dozen times, but he can't seem to get away from that little black doctor's bag of his. Maybe he carries his soul in it.

Rune:
Yeah, that's good. What soul he's got!

Society Red:
[Waiting to see if Doc Frail will call his poker bet] Take your time, Doc. Like a man says: where the wind blows too hard, the trees gotta bend.

Dr. Joseph 'Doc' Frail:
[Red assumes Frail will not call and starts to claim the pot] Wait a minute. The trees haven't blown down yet.

Dr. Joseph 'Doc' Frail:
[Frail antes up] Call.

Society Red:
Ace high.

Dr. Joseph 'Doc' Frail:
[Winning the pot] Pair of deuces.

Frenchy Plante:
[as they're searching for the woman, he hears noise from behind a rock] Hey, you like to kill snakes?

Rune:
I do.

Society Red:
[after being knocked to the ground by an angry Frail after making a reference to Frail's past] I ain't gonna slap no leather with you, Doc Frail.

Dr. Joseph 'Doc' Frail:
[Trying to be encouraging to Elizabeth as she opens her eyes for the first time] If you open your eyes and look, you'll see things for what they are. Now, I'm gonna leave you here. You're standing on the edge of a cliff. I don't advise you to go through life with your eyes closed.

Townsman in wagon:
[Reassuringly to wife] Every new mining camp's got to have its hanging tree. Makes it feel respectable.

Townsman:
[after he has sold his cabin and its furnishings to Doc Frail, an Indian woman comes out of he cabin] I'll throw her in for another five dollar gold piece.

Dr. Joseph 'Doc' Frail:
[Unenthusiasticly] No thanks.

Tom Flaunce:
[Looking at the young woman with her second degree burns] That poor thing ought to be dead.

Frenchy Plante:
Eh, she ain't much left from the neck up, but she is all woman from there down, eh? [His lascivious inference is met with disapproving stares by the townsmen]

Elizabeth Mahler:
Must you always look at a woman like that?

Frenchy Plante:
Don't a partner have some right, hanh? don't he ever get a free look? I suppose you gotta get a doctor to get that, hunh? I suppose if you was a doctor, then you could get an eyeful, hanh? [She slaps him]
