Starcom: The U.S. Space Force

Starcom: The U.S. Space Force is a 1987 animated syndicated U.S. television series inspired by a motorized toy franchise manufactured by Coleco. The characters were adapted for animation by series creator Brynne Stephens, who also story edited the show. Starcom was produced by DIC Animation City and distributed by Coca-Cola Telecommunications. The plot detailed the adventures of an American astronaut brigade as they fought off attempted invasions by Shadow Force, a nasty collection of humans and robots led by the nefarious Emperor Dark. The toy line was popular in Europe and Asia, but was unsuccessful in the North American domestic market. The show was developed with the help of the Young Astronauts’ Council, with the original intention of sparking young viewers’ interest in the NASA Space Program. Starcom did not get much of a chance to reach the intended audience before it was cancelled after one brief season. The series was broadcast in reruns in the early 1990s, but no new episodes were produced.

Wait! Maybe I can jury-rig the repellor fields to give us some buoyancy!

Col. James 'Dash' Derringer, Star Wing:
[to Slim] I don't know... Is that in the rule book, Slim?

Col. John 'Slim' Griffin, Starbase Command:
It is now! [to Crowbar] Do it!

Jonathan "Flash" Maskowitz:
...Mars, the Red Planet! Like the God of War for whom it is named, it is a place of intense danger!

Col. James 'Dash' Derringer, Star Wing:
Knock it off, will you!

Col. Paul 'Crowbar' Corbin:
[under fire from General Von Dar and Sergeant Borek]... Ever use one of THESE before? [he passes Flash a phaser]

Jonathan "Flash" Maskowitz:
Uh, sure!... Well, I know how to take one apart.

Col. Paul 'Crowbar' Corbin:
You're not instilling me with a whole lot of confidence, kid.

Jonathan "Flash" Maskowitz:
[shooting at Borek and Von Dar]... Leaping Luna! This is easy! YEAH! HA HA! Eat photons, Shadow-scum! [Crowbar grabs him and they flee toward a Sturgeon-class training vehicle]

Col. James 'Dash' Derringer, Star Wing:
We gotta get this old bird in the air NOW!

Jonathan "Flash" Maskowitz:
Blazing to new adventures in the High Frontier!

Col. James 'Dash' Derringer, Star Wing:
SHUT HIM UP!

Jonathan "Flash" Maskowitz:
[over "Cadetnet," upon being chosen for a work-study project at Starcom Headquarters Saturn]... Outgoing message for every cadet in Starcom Academy: While you're all cooling your jets on Luna, guess who's going to be blasting off with the members of Starcom - Me, Flash Maskowitz, Ace of the Space Lanes! Rocketing off to fight for interplanetary justice! Missions of daring in the wild vast reaches of space! Preserving universal freedom in the world beyond tomorrow! [all this from a science division-cadet who's ineligible for anything else, due to his bad eyes; for him, hands-on training consists of reading comic books and playing with model spaceships]

Jonathan "Flash" Maskowitz:
[preparing to depart for Mars]... Space Cadet Maskowitz, ready to blast off for adventure, Sir! [then, as he's directed to ride in the cargo module]... Shouldn't someone be on surveillance? When Starcom's on the job, the evil Shadow Forces of Emperor Dark are lurking nearby, following our every move!

Col. James 'Dash' Derringer, Star Wing:
Yeah, we count them among our biggest fans... I heard you haven't had much flight experience.

Jonathan "Flash" Maskowitz:
That's a load of space-gas, sir! Why, I've -

Col. James 'Dash' Derringer, Star Wing:
[cutting him off] You're not calling Captain Ruffing a liar, are you?
