Each individual character is so well rounded within an archetype of personality. So, people can see themselves as a Rainbow Dash, a Rarity, or an Applejack. That is the basis of excellent storytelling. Don't think of it as six little ponies in Ponyville. Think of it as six friends learning from each other. It just happens to be wrapped up in a package of pastel ponies that's animated well.
