My Broken Pieces A few weeks back, a longtime friend asked if I would meet her for lunch to discuss a new job offer. We sat in the restaurant for forty-five minutes discussing her new job opportunity when her face grew solemn. She sighed, staring down into her plate. I asked, “is everything all right,” knowing she did not ask me to meet to discuss a job offer. She said, “everything is fine, but I cannot get your story or quote about the broken pieces out of my mind.” She took a deep breath raised her head and, in half whisper, said, “it really described the broken pieces in my marriage? I answered, “when promises, borders and commitment are broken, and especially betrayal, the relationship may be repaired but never return to what it once was or could have been.” Before she left, she thanked me for giving her a copy. I refer to the story, as “The Broken Vase.” The Broken Vase Love and marriage are often broken by betrayal, lies and unkept promises. Betrayal is the ultimate form of deceit and deception. It reminded me of something I wrote many years ago about a vase that was knocked off the shelf and broken into many pieces. For a moment you’re not sure what to do but then you decide to try and repair it. Imagine trying to pick up the pieces of your life, left behind in the wake of betrayal. You must be methodical and cautious because your path is covered with egg shells. You realize it may not be the same as it once was, but would vase be good enough to keep. After all, you’ve had it for thirty years. When you believe all the pieces have been collected and placed on the table, you do one last search for the smallest pieces you may have missed. You find two small pieces, place them on the table and stare down at the broken pieces of something you cherished and was beautiful. Something so precious you often proudly displayed it to friends Over a period of three weeks, you managed to glue the vase back together. You slowly turn it around on the table and realize it is an archaic reproduction of its original form. There are holes in it created by pieces you did not find and never will. Like the pieces missing from your relationship. Held together by history and commitment but still broken. And severely damaged. The vase will never hold flowers again because it cannot hold water. And like your relationship, it has become fragile as you watch a piece fall off the vase when you lifted off the table. And when you think about the broken pieces collected from your relationship, you know that will also never be the same. As you held up the beautiful vase to show people it’s beauty, that now is simply a collection of glued pieces that resembles your relationship. You can no longer showcase your marriage. Only because of its history you place the vase back on the self, but it seems out of place and detracts from the ambience around it. After a few weeks you take the vase to your home office and place it on a shelf. A few weeks later, you sadly change the location to the closet. And like your relationship it has been moved to a different place. A dark place. When people say to you, you and your wife seem to get along very well. You think about showing them the vase. All that remains of the relationship is held together by glue. After several years you are still seeking out the missing pieces from your heart knowing deep inside you will never find. There’s only one way to get them back and that is to leave. But leaving will also mean breaking more pieces. Those are your two choices. If you leave, you will get back some of the pieces you lost but you would lose others by virtue of leaving.

Aldrin in the Apollo 11 Lunar Module. For the 50th anniversary of the landing, Omega issued a limited edition Speedmaster watch, a tribute to the one that Buzz Aldrin wore to the moon. ( Neil Armstrong/NASA via AP) I prefaced desolate with magnificent, because of humanitys reaching outward and accomplishing something that people thought was impossible, Buzz Aldrin said. They dreamed of somehow reaching the moon. And to demonstrate, to be a part of demonstrating this miracle was magnificent. On July 16, 1969, Buzz Aldrin, along with mission commander Neil Armstrong and command module pilot Michael Collins, launched from Kennedy Space Center atop a Saturn V rocket. Four days later, Neil Armstrong made history when Neil Armstrong became the first person to walk on the Moon. Aldrinexited thelunar module 19 minutes after Neil Armstrong. The famed astronaut joked about being second during his interview. APOLLO 11 INSIDERS REMEMBER HISTORYS MOST FAMOUS SPACE MISSION : WE HAD A JOB TO DO AND WE DID IT I will forever, no matter what I do, be known as the second man on the moon, he quipped. In this July 20, 1969 photo made available by NASA, astronaut Buzz Aldrin, lunar module pilot, walks on the surface of the moon during the Apollo 11 extravehicular activity. ( Neil Armstrong/NASA via AP) Why does it bother you to be a second man to walk on the moon ? Youre one of a dozen men who had that incredible role, Cavuto asked in a follow-up question. Well, people love being vice president, dont they ? No, Buzz Aldrin responded with a chuckle. APOLLO 11S EPIC MISSION TO THE MOON IN PICTURES Does it bother me ? Yeah, it does a little bit, Buzz Aldrin continued. Why ? Because that isnt the way I would have described what this country did with two human beings landing on the moon and then deciding who was going to go out. We did things together as a team. The famous astronaut also recalls his famous steps across the surface of the moon and how he was well aware that the world was watching. Right near the end of our period out there Buzz Aldrin was doing something with the rock boxes -- I knew where the TV camera was, and I jumped up and down and pranced around to demonstrate the mobility that a person has, he said. So I was demonstrating for the people watching on TVintentionally showing them the varieties of kangaroo hop of turning. APOLLO 11 INSIDERS REMEMBER HISTORYS MOST FAMOUS SPACE MISSION : WE HAD A JOB TO DO AND WE DID IT During his sit-down with Cavuto, Buzz Aldrin also recollected the experience of looking back at Earth while on the surface of the Moon. [ You ] look up there, theres the earth. It looks small when its up there. If you look close, you may be able to see the ice over a pole, he said. If you look at your Omega watch, you may be able to tell what time it is in Houston. Buzz Aldrin also talked about the political significance of their mission to the moon, coming as it did duringthe space race with Russia atthe height of the Cold War. APOLLO 11 : THE BOOK THAT LANDED MAN ON THE MOON COULD SELL FOR $ 9 MILLION I do a lot of thinking today -- about somebody who had -- the guts to see that we were being outshone -- outshined in the Cold War by the Soviet Union, and to say, What can we do ?

America has always been a land of opportunity. Its the one place on earth where you can go from building brick walls in the Texas heat to the kind of success my brother and I have achieved, ted Cruz believes in the opportunity society, he believes in the dignity of hard work, and hes not afraid to fight for what he believes in. The Wilkses are not the only billionaires backing Cruz. Reclusive hedge fund magnate Robert Mercer gave $11 million; Texas energy investor Toby Neugebauer gave $10 million. Mercer has declined to comment on why he is supporting Cruz, while Neugebauer backs Cruz for his track record promoting conservative causes and opposing the federal debt. Despite the large donations, Cruz is not among the leaders of the Republican race. A Reuters/Ipsos poll on Sept. 8 showed him in fourth place among Republican voters at 5.5 percent, tied with former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee and Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker. . PRAYING FOR CRUZ. The day after President Barack Obama won a second term, I was pretty bummed out, Farris Wilks told congregants in a sermon on Nov. 7, 2012, a recording of which was provided by Peter Montgomery, a senior fellow with the equal rights group People for the American Way. I do believe that our country died that Tuesday night, Wilks said. Less than a year later, Farris found himself in the ballroom of the Marriott Hotel in Des Moines, Iowa, where Cruz stood with head bowed in a prayer circle, surrounded by evangelical Christians. Cruz was among the political headliners at a Pastors and Pews conference, an annual, closed-door affair that now occurs in roughly 14 states and is organized by Christian nationalist David Lane. The born-again Lane, a self-described former wild man of drugs, wine, women and song, believes the Bible should be the primary textbook in public schools and that judges who favor same-sex marriage should be impeached. He says people who embrace homosexual marriage, along with pagan public schools, pagan higher learning and pagan media, are creating Americas downfall with their multiracial false gods. One of Lanes major aims is to motivate at least 1,000 pastors to run for office in 2016. Polling shows there are 65 million to 80 million evangelical Christians but only a quarter of them vote. Getting 5 percent more registered and voting would, according to Lane, put a conservative in the White House. Asked about the Wilks brothers' financial support for Cruz, Lane said in an interview:.
