Though boys throw stones at frogs in sport, the frogs do not die in sport, but in earnest.

Bion, Greek bucolic poet, was a native of the city of Smyrna and flourished about 100 BC

    I heard this quote a million years ago when I was a college student. It stuck with me. The highest quality of being human is the awareness of suffering of all things. I killed a grasshopper in my garden today. They are huge and beautifully colored critters. Their appetite is voracious. Overnight they can strip down a lovely flowered bush leaving but the stims and a slow brown death for the plant. In a quiet fury. I knocked the insect to the ground and ground him under my boot. He was in the throes of death when I raised my foot, writhing in apparent agony. I immediately thought of the quote, and then
    in remorse, the Keats poem:

    The Poetry of earth is never dead:
    When all the birds are faint with the hot sun,
    And hide in cooling trees, a voice will run
    From hedge to hedge about the new-mown mead;
    That is the Grasshopper’s—he takes the lead
    In summer luxury,—he has never done
    With his delights; for when tired out with fun
    He rests at ease beneath some pleasant weed.

    Possibly to get mashed underfoot by a vindictive gardner.

    Think not that we humans go unscathed for such acts:

    "As wonton boys to flys we are to the gods. They kill
    us for their sport."
