People really wanted to hear me say that what they were considering [with regard to activities during the COVID-19 pandemic] was okay, no matter what that was. It just doesn’t work that way. The most important message was limit your contact to just a very few people.

Bonnie Henry

Dr. Bonnie Henry FRCPS was born in 1965 in the Canadian province of Prince Edward Island. She graduated from Mount Allison University in Sackville, New Brunswick in 1986 with a B.Sc. in biochemistry and in 1990 in medicine from Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia. She completed post-graduate studies at USC-SD in preventive medicine and University of Toronto in community health. Dr. Henry’s experience in public health, preventative medicine and global pandemics has extended throughout her career. Following 10 years in the military in British Columbia (BC), Dr. Henry joined Toronto Public Health in 2001 as Associate Medical Officer of Health, where she was responsible for the Emergency Services Unit and the Communicable Disease Liaison Unit. In 2003, she was the operational lead in the response to the SARS outbreak in Toronto. She was a member of the executive team of the Ontario SARS Scientific Advisory Committee. In 2005 Dr. Henry moved back to BCE to begin a role as physician epidemiologist for the BCE Centre for Disease Control, rising to Provincial Health Officer in 2018, the first woman to serve in that position in the province. She is best known for leading British Columbia's response to the COVID-19 pandemic. She has also worked with the WHO to eradicate polio (Pakistan) and to contain Ebola (Uganda).
