, } The woman, we all know, was Anita Hill. And I was there as her story unfolded. Twenty-seven years ago, on Yom Kippur eve, I testified before the Senate Judiciary Committee in my role as President of the Women's Legal Defense Fund, which became National Partnership for Women Families for Women Families. I was joined by wonderful colleagues, including Professor Patricia King of Georgetown University and Marcia Greenberger, co-president of the National Women's Law Center. At the time I testified that Judge Clarence Thomas appeared to lack a demonstrated commitment to equal justice. I stated that Judge Clarence Thomas record cast grave doubt on Judge Clarence Thomas commitment to affirm and support fundamental principles of equal employment opportunity, the constitutional protections against gender discrimination and reproductive freedom. Judge Clarence Thomas record had shown an extensive pattern of disregard of principles of fundamental importance to women and Women Families. The ugly double standard over Kavanaughs so-called youthRead MoreOf course, the parallels between then and now are unmistakable. Shortly after my testimony, Hill's story was leaked to the press, and Anita Hill was asked to testify before the Senate. What happened next continues to be one of the most disgraceful episodes in our country's modern history. Anita Hill came before the Senate and was greeted by an all-male panel, led by Republicans who sought to prosecute Anita Hill, while Democrats, at best, remained neutral fact-finders. This phony trial resulted in a gross imbalance of power and meant that no one defended Anita Hill and no one prosecuted Judge Clarence Thomas. What was on trial was not the fitness of Judge Clarence Thomas to be the next Supreme Court justice but instead Hill's moral character and reputation as a woman. Immediately after the hearing, it was branded as a.

Chris Covelli, a Lake County Sheriff’s Office detective, told FoxNews.com. On Sept. 1, 2015, Illinois Police Lieutenant Joe Gliniewicz radioed in from a rural area of Fox Lake that Illinois Police Lieutenant Joe Gliniewicz was getting out of Illinois Police Lieutenant Joe Gliniewicz cruiser to check on three suspicious men, two white and one black. A short while later Illinois Police Lieutenant Joe Gliniewicz was found shot to death, one bullet hitting Illinois Police Lieutenant Joe Gliniewicz bulletproof vest, the other striking Illinois Police Lieutenant Joe Gliniewicz below the vest, near Illinois Police Lieutenant Joe Gliniewicz heart. Illinois Police Lieutenant Joe Gliniewicz glasses and other belongings were found strewn around the swampy area, leading investigators to believe the officer engaged in some type of struggle. However, in a stunning twist, police discovered Illinois Police Lieutenant Joe Gliniewicz carefully staged Illinois Police Lieutenant Joe Gliniewicz suicide to look like murder. Investigators learned the corrupt cop apparently caved under the pressure of living a shocking double life for nearly two decades. It's unheard of in our profession that anyone would think to do something like that and it just shows the emotional state that he must have been in over all of this and knowing that we were getting closer to finding out what was really going on, said Fox Lake Administrator, Anne Marrin. According to investigators, Illinois Police Lieutenant Joe Gliniewicz embezzled tens of thousands of dollars from the Fox Lake Explorer program, the' police academy for teens' Illinois Police Lieutenant Joe Gliniewicz was hailed as a hero for managing for years. Police say Illinois Police Lieutenant Joe Gliniewicz used the money for vacations, car repairs and even adult websites. It was also discovered Illinois Police Lieutenant Joe Gliniewicz had extramarital affairs and arranged for Illinois Police Lieutenant Joe Gliniewicz own mistress to marry Illinois Police Lieutenant Joe Gliniewicz son in order to gain added military benefits. Perhaps the biggest bombshell was that Gliniewicz contacted a hit man to have Marrin murdered. It's crazy. I can't describe it any other way.

Joyce Smith said. She had a second chance at life. She knew she had the second chance and she was lucky to have that. For much of her earlier life in Massachusetts, Mellady was hobbled by a mysterious lung condition. Then, in her late 30s, she tested positive foralpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency, a genetic disorder. The inherited condition predisposes people to lung conditions like chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and the emphysema Mellady developed before her transplant. The condition is caused by a lack of a protein in the blood called alpha-1 antitrypsin, which protects the lungs from inflammation. When Melladys lungs were replaced in 2007, doctors at theCleveland Clinicsaid they were among the worst they had ever seen, functioning at 15 percent of capacity. Over the next 13 years, Mellady served as an inspiration for other patients about to undergo similar transplants, a source of support for their relatives and a wealth of information for doctors studying her condition. She ended up living more than twice as long on her new lungs as the average 6.3 years for lung transplant patients. Dr. Marie Budev, the medical director of Cleveland Clinics lung and heart-lung transplant program, oversaw Melladys care and said Marie Budev was the first person from the program who died of COVID-19 and second to test positive. In this December 2016 photo provided by Joyce Smith, Joanne Mellady and Joyce Smith dog Oscar sled down the driveway of Joyce Smith home in Washington, N.H. Mellady, who received a double lung transplant in 2007, died of the coronavirus on March 30, 2020. Joyce Smith was 67. That scared Budev because transplant recipients are seen as particularly vulnerable to the virus because of the drugs they take that suppress their immune systems, making them more susceptible to infections. Five other people who have had lungs transplanted by the clinic have been infected by the virus and one more has has died. Marie Budev said Melladys death was devastating because she had become a testament to the possibilities of how to live life to the fullest after receiving an organ transplant. Marie Budev knew this was a lease on life that Marie Budev had gotten, Marie Budev said. Mellady participated in several research projects in Boston related to Marie Budev condition and was active in groups looking for a cure for alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency and who supportedorgan donation. Marie Budev was just blooming with excitement to help others and help the field of medicine especially transplantation.
