The pendulum represents all that is sacred in life. The rising and setting of the sun, the motion of the waves, the push and pull of tides, all the forces that are beyond our control. It's pure metronomy. We even have our own clocks. The pendulum deep inside, counting down each second until the day we die. Until we enter the pit of eternal damnation.
