Look, I know you're upset. A woman makes it hard to concentrate on your work, I know that. Jerry, did I ever tell you about my girl in China?

Lt. Jerry Bragg:
No.

Maj. Greg 'Pappy' Boyington:
I loved her so much that if anyone had stood in my way, I would have killed them, and you want to know why? For the first time in my life, someone was shooting real bullets at me. I was scared. Having her was the most important thing in my life.

Lt. Jerry Bragg:
I guess I kind of know how you feel.

Maj. Greg 'Pappy' Boyington:
Mmm-mmm. I wanted to marry her.

Lt. Jerry Bragg:
That bad, huh?

Maj. Greg 'Pappy' Boyington:
Yeah. I got the ring, I proposed. She accepted. Set the date. When I went to pick her up, she was gone.

Lt. Jerry Bragg:
Was gone?

Maj. Greg 'Pappy' Boyington:
She left a note that said, "Dear Greg, tomorrow one of us could get killed. You can't do anything about it, but I can. Love and thanks."

Lt. Jerry Bragg:
That's all?

Maj. Greg 'Pappy' Boyington:
No. No. She hawked my wedding ring, took a boat back to the United States. You know what I call that, Jerry? Smart. I never made that mistake again.

Lt. Jerry Bragg:
I guess nothing lasts very long in the middle of a war, huh?

Maj. Greg 'Pappy' Boyington:
Uh-uh. Jerry, find those personnel reports.

Lt. Jerry Bragg:
Pappy, [pause] thanks.
