Quotes from the news wire:
The world is horrified by what Russia has done, aided and abetted by Belarus. World leaders sought to avoid this invasion through diplomatic means but to no avail given Russia’s unswerving intention to invade Ukraine. The unprecedented sanctions that are being imposed on Russia and Belarus by countries and industries all over the world appear to be the only peaceful way to disrupt and disable Russia’s current intentions and restore peace., anyone who knows me will understand that imposing sanctions on athletes because of the actions of their government goes against the grain. I have railed against the practice of politicians targeting athletes and sport to make political points when other sectors continue about their business. This is different as governments, business and other international organizations have imposed sanctions and measures against Russia across all sectors. Sport has to step up and join these efforts to end this war and restore peace. We can not and should not sit this one out.

I speak to the athletes all the time, the vast majority of athletes... are understanding that it will not be the type of Olympic Games they’ve experienced before... but they still know they would rather be here than sit out the dance. It’s important for them.

We know this is a stressful situation for many athletes and we are trying to provide meaningful assistance ... so they can continue to train for the competition season we have scheduled for August to October, and for next year's Olympics.

A banned coach has to sever relationships with those athletes. That's what's taking place, coaches and athletes have to make judgments all the time. If you are coached by somebody, you should be absolutely comfortable that you are working in an environment that's safe and secure and is not going to damage you own reputation. An athlete should ask those questions.
We have given the opportunity for the athletes to ingest a tablet, it has a thermometer and can allow us to monitor the way they are dealing with heat and humidity, this has given us the opportunity and conditions for our medical teams and science teams to understand a great deal more about management of heat for athletes going forward.
There has been a lot of effort and time taken to understand the technology which will be transferable but this has given us an opportunity to do a lot of work through our medical teams around the management of heat, those findings will probably be more applicable and more profound for us going forward to Tokyo than they will be here.
We believe that ultimately these changes will be beneficial not only to Kenyan and East African distance runners, but to our leading athletes around the globe, because it will result in a stronger, higher-profile, commercially-successful annual showcase series for our sport, and it's important to remember that the IAAF will be creating other continental competition opportunities outside the Diamond League as we redesign the global calendar.
I have sought advice from the IAAF's Ethics Committee to review my interests and was told I could retain my positions in Nike and CSM as long as I do not seek to influence any decisions that could influence them, i'm grateful for that advice but it is clear that perception and reality have become horribly mangled.
To regain membership to the IAAF the new federation would have to fulfil a list of criteria, an inspection team will be led by Independent Chair Rune Andersen, an independent international anti-doping expert (Norwegian) and three members of the IAAF Council who will be appointed in the next few days.
We will get the change we want and only then will Russian athletes return to international competition, this is not about politics, this is about the protection of clean athletes. I cannot overstate the feeling around the conference call this evening about sending the strongest possible message that we can.
I was dismayed to see the interpretation put on our motives, our judgments and our actions, there is nothing in the history of our sport in the last 15 or 20 years other than us being on the cutting edge of either trying to develop the science of weeding out the cheats or taking the actions appropriate to finding them.
What has angered me and angered our sport is the betrayal that we are doing absolutely nothing when we have led the way on this and have consistently done so, every athlete at the world championships in 2011 and 2013 was subject to blood tests, that's unprecedented. We spend two million dollars a year( on anti-doping) and we are not a rich sport, we have 10 full time professionals.
You have to say that the scope and scale of these allegations takes it beyond simply a competitor deciding to step beyond the moral boundary, the very fact that the allegations are in the public domain means that they are serious. So, we have to be very clear that this is a very, very difficult time for our sport.
You have to say that the scope and scale of these allegations takes it beyond simply a competitor deciding to step beyond the moral boundary, this is not in every country of the world, there are 213 federations. But you do have to say a disproportionate amount of the reputational damage is in a relatively small number of countries, and I think we have to recognize this.
