Quotes from the news wire:
The way social media works these days, people do not really ‘follow’ or ‘friend’ others, but instead read hashtags and look for further information on that hash tag, islamic State learned this social media trick early. The technique now appears to be used by people and groups promoting violence against police.
By showing that they have state-like powers, that Islamic State fighters are a real army and not mere disorganized combatants, and that Islamic State fighters operate as such, The Islamic State is attempting to impress and instill fear in the populations it targets as its enemies, they are showing that they are a force to be reckoned with.
The new frontier of jihadi communication is taking place on a Telegram – a recently launched messaging platform that has revolutionized the social media sphere, and at least for now put an end to any watchdog oversight, because of Telegram, jihadists no longer have to struggle to keep up with relentless account suspensions and content removal.
FromAl Qaeda in the Arabian PeninsulatoJabhat al-Nusra toAnsar al-Sharia in LibyatoJaysh al-Islam, the rate of membership escalation for each discrete channelis staggering, within a week's time, one single Islamic State channel went from 5,000 members to well over 10,000 members. If you have spent any time watching Boko Haram, you would know that Shekau is truly insane and his version of Islam is even too radical for Islamic State, a mixture of part witch doctor/part voodoo/part radical Islam. He is usually screaming, surrounded by a posse, and at least one tank, this last video is a totally new Shekau, calm, cool collective.Someone is directing his image. My thought is he is a wild card that Islamic State cannot afford to ally with unless they rebrand him or get rid of him entirely.
