On one hand, the woman was empowered ... she was a briefcase-carrying worker outside the home. But then there was the superwoman complex that came along and meant that while she was doing all that, she was also raising kids, and she was also trying to please her man, it was like, OK women — you wanted it all so now you can work, you can raise kids, you can look sexy and make the money.

When I was starting out, it took a while for me to convince even feminists that this was a serious issue, because feminists would say, 'Look, we're dealing with important issues like violence and equal pay, and we don't have time to worry about the image of women in advertising.' But my point was the image of women in advertising has an impact on all these things. The objectification of women leads to violence, and the stereotyping of women makes it less likely that women will get equal pay and decent jobs.

[Ads in the 1970s] were very blatantly sexist, in those days, there was no consciousness about the fact that this might not be a good idea or that this might be offensive. So [advertisers] were able to get away with an ad for a feminine hygiene spray that said, 'Feminine odor is everyone's problem.' Or a cigarette ad where a woman said, 'My boyfriend told me he loved me for my mind. I was never so insulted in my life.' Or an ad for a construction material, which showed a nude woman with a sort of large derriere and thighs, and the copy read, 'She's built like all our products ... heavy where she has to take the strain.'.

The message a child gets is that not only is another person's emotional state their responsibility but that they must also sacrifice their own bodies to buoy another's ego or satisfy their desire for love or affection, certainly no parent would wish for their teenager or adult child to feel pressure to reciprocate unwanted sexual advances, yet many teach their children at a young age that it's their job to use their bodies to make others happy.

It sends a message that there are certain situations (when) it's not up to them what they do with their bodies, if they are obligated to be affectionate even if they don't want to, it makes them vulnerable to sexual abuse later on.

The only way to accelerate the life experience process, since they're just kids and don't have a lot of life experiences, is to go on a journey learning from other people's life experiences, so when you read a book with your children, ask them questions about how the main character might be feeling or what motivates the main character or what you would do if you were in their shoes.

Some people might look at this and say, 'Well, if my child measures low on a scale like this, does this mean my child is doomed or ... they are sentenced to all these terrible outcomes?'.

Traditionally, we're focused much more on academic achievement and more and more we're realizing through many studies that academic achievement is only one part of making somebody successful, if we're sticking with the schools analogy, it takes the discipline, it takes the motivation, the attitude, the ability to work with others and work with adults to be able to succeed in schools and attain degrees.

As a Londoner I can't say I'm familiar with all the labels on their schedule, but if you'd asked the New Yorkers the same question when the London men's shows launched, they'd probably have said the same. And I knew all those London designers. So I can't say how mature these businesses are on average, but I think a big part of these young men's weeks is the fact that it's the individual city doing it for their city, once this fashion week has hopefully worked its magic for these young designers, the international guests won't want to miss it.

The vote by the executive committee to recommend that gay, lesbian and bisexual adults be allowed to work and volunteer for the Boy Scouts is a welcome step toward erasing a stain on one of our nation's most storied organizations, but writing in an exemption for troops organized by religious organizations undermines the potentially historic nature of today's vote.
