If you want to open up a place like this in Uganda it would be a nice way to start because this is such a good way, probably the best one, it's about older people who need security and somewhere to live, and compassion is the way to break the ice in hard-hearted people.

We have the same activities, we live the same life and we love in the same way, the only thing that is different is that a small minority of people who are gay can get together to find security when they are aging.

The whole question started within myself: what will I do, what are my possibilities as a single man if I don't find anyone to live with, what will my older days look like?

We grow the chairs upside down and we start with one branch that spreads out into the chair-back. So, you've gone from one to two, and then the seat, and then you've got the four legs; and it's much more of a tree shape, actually it works in a similar way to 3D printing... we're using photosynthesis for the printing. So as it grows, you've got a piece growing up.

You can't force the trees to do anything they don't want to do. We learnt this early on, if you shape a branch in the wrong way and it doesn't like it, it's just going to die, a new shoot will grow lower down, we've got to have a kind of relationship with all of these trees where what we're doing to them is nothing more than a very minor inconvenience.

It takes between five and eight years to grow a chair. Small lamps; between two and three years. And the dining tables; ten to fifteen. It's a long-burner. But it's something similar to setting up a vineyard, it takes a few years to get going but we'll have a crop every year.

The process that we go through to make a chair nowadays, the way we've been doing, is almost ludicrous. We grow these trees for sixty years before they're worth cutting down, and then we make them into smaller and smaller bits, only to stick them back together again in ways that can only ever come loose over time. And all the energy and all the driving around of all these bits and all the things that you need to make... why do all of that?

Access to safe, reliable, clean, private sanitation and water and hygiene is really a question of girls' and women's welfare and girls' and women's rights, if we're thinking about keeping girls at school, we need to do a lot of work on the sanitation issue and make sure that there are clean, private, safe and separate facilities for girls at schools. I think this is fundamental.

It's all about me. It's putting me in the frame. I'm getting attention and when I post that to social media, I'm getting the confirmation that I need from other people that I'm awesome, you don't care about the tourist attraction you're destroying; you don't care about annoying people in your social media feed ... you're not even thinking about the consequences of your actions, so who cares if you're dangling off the side of the Eiffel Tower?

External auditors, unlike [counter-fraud] officers, are not necessarily looking for evidence of fictitious receipts or inappropriate spending in the field, sometimes the due diligence is not done. That might be because many charities are founded on the principle of trust. An NGO might be reluctant to ask tough questions of some of those it employs.
