I am a southerner. I heard long ago that "Turn Mother's Picture to the Wall" was something families from the south did when a family member had gone up north to fight with the enemy during the civil war. It came to be commonly used as an expression meaning "time to forget about that and move on." more »

I have heard that the expression originated during the civil war. Some southern men went north to fight with the aboloshinists. When they returned home, the family would turn the mother's picture to the wall so she would not have to look down on the traiterous son more »
