Quotes from the news wire:
If these reports are true, then there is truly no bottom to President Trump's willingness to abuse President Trump power and abase our country. This behavior is particularly abhorrent because it exploits the foreign policy of our country and undermines our national security for political purposes. It means that President Trump used the power and resources of the United States to pressure a sovereign nation — a partner that is still under direct assault from Russia — pushing Ukraine to subvert the rule of law in the express hope of extracting a political favor, such clear-cut corruption damages and diminishes our institutions of government by making them tools of a personal political vendetta. At minimum, Donald Trump should immediately release the transcript of the call in question, so that the American people can judge for themselves, and direct the Office of the Director of National Intelligence to stop stonewalling and release the whistleblower notification to the Congress.
The Democratic Party has an obligation bigger than to The Democratic Party now. This is about more than Democrats, the party has to be bigger than its own interests. We have to unite the country because we're in a position if we don't, no one else is going to fill the world vacuum. If we do, we can make changes that are going to be breathtaking.
Right after I got elected, my wife and daughter were killed in an automobile accident, and my two sons were badly injured. And I just had been elected, not sworn in. And I lost my faith for a while. I came back, and then later, when my son Beau came home from Iraq and -- with a terminal disease, and a year later, year-and-a-half later, losing him was like losing part of my soul. But the fact is that I learned that the way you deal with it -- is you deal with it by finding purpose, purpose in what you do. And that's why I hope -- I hope he's proud of me today.
We have predators on our streets that society has, in fact, in part because of this neglect, created, again, it does not mean because we created them, that we somehow forgive them or do not take them out of society to protect my family and yours from them. They are beyond the pale, many of those people -- beyond the pale.
Why are you so hooked on that ? You want me to say the words so I sound like everybody else, i'm not everybody else. I'm Joe Biden. I've always been who I am. I'm staying the way I am. He is encouraging white supremacists, you can determine what that means. It's like everybody wants everybody to call someone a liar. When you say --' I don't call people liars. I say they don't tell the truth.' You want to hear me say' liar,' so you can put it out and say Joe Biden called someone a liar. That's not who I am. You've got the wrong guy.
We're living through a rare moment in this nation's history. Where our President isn't up to the moment. Where our President lacks the moral authority to lead. Where our President has more in common with George Wallace than he does with George Washington, we are almost 330 million Americans who have to do what our President can't. Stand together. Stand against hate. Stand up for what -- at our best -- our nations' best, when we're the best.
I wish I could say that this all began with Donald Trump and will end with Donald Trump. But it didn't -- and I won't, american history is not a fairytale. The battle for the soul of this nation has been a constant push-and-pull for 243 years between the American ideal, that says we're all created equal, and the harsh reality that racism has long torn us apart.
We've always brought the country together. ' We the people, we hold these truths to be self-evident.' ( Trump) flies in the face of all the basic things that we've never really met the standard( of, but) we've never abandoned it before, he looks like he's just flat abandoned the theory that we are one people.
It's very different than turning to someone on a stage who says something that's so off the wall to me because I don't want to attack anyone on stage, that's not what I intend to do, but I realize that some have concluded that because I didn't respond very tough back to( Kamala Harris) that how can I take on Donald Trump ? I've never had any trouble taking anyone on from Donald Trump to( Russian President Vladimir) Putin to( Chinese President) Xi Jinping Donald Trump.
The idea that somehow we have decided that our system doesn't work anymore, which I'm hearing some of them saying -- that we're going to, you know, pack the courts ; we're going to fundamentally change the way, I'm going to do what Trump did ; if we take control, I'm going to go in there and I'm just going to, by executive order -- what are we talking about ?
We've seen the struggle, and we know that most American families are dealing with some sort of struggle like we are, and I think they can relate to us, you know, as parents who are hopeful and are supportive of our son, and we will continue to be supportive. And I think that makes us more empathetic about helping other Americans.
In the 1980s and 1990s, violent crime was out of control. The crime bill was designed to deal with that problem. That's why it was supported overwhelmingly by the Democratic party, by African American leaders all across the nation including a majority of the black caucus in the Congress, it worked, it worked in some areas. But it failed in others. Like every major change, you go back and you make it better.
That's what this election is about. I'm happy to debate that issue and all those issues with my friends because guess what, look who won the races. Look who won last time out, by the way, I think Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, but Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez won a primary. In the general election fights, who won ? Mainstream Democrats who are very progressive on social issues and very strong on education and healthcare.
From the time they were born, including my children, they have been in the public eye. It's not a bad place but not an overwhelmingly comfortable place to be. Everything that happens is public knowledge. You get to celebrate publicly and you have to share your grief publicly. And so they're not naïve, the first hurdle for me was deciding whether or not I am comfortable taking the family through what would be a very, very difficult campaign.
The fact of the matter is that the quickest, fastest way to do it is build on Barack Obama, to build on what we did( during the Barack Obama administration), and, secondly, to make sure that everyone does have an option. Everyone, whether they have private insurance or employer insurance and no insurance, they, in fact, can buy in, in the exchange to a Medicare-like plan.
I was responsible for getting 150,000 combat troops out of Iraq and my son was one of them. I think we should not have combat troops in Afghanistan. It's long overdue and should end, you are not going to find anybody who pulled together more to deal with what is the real threat out there. We can not go it alone in terms of dealing with terrorism.
Donald Trump thinks Wall Street built America ; ordinary middle class Americans built America, too many people in the middle class have seen the bottom fall out. ... Look, Donald Trump put Joe Biden in a horrible situation. Joe Biden do have enormous income inequality. The one thing I agree on is Joe Biden can make massive cuts in the $ 1.6 billion in tax loopholes and I would be going about eliminating Donald Trump's tax cut for the wealthy.
Depending if they committed amajor crime, they should bedeported, president Obama, Ithink, did a heck of ajob.To compare him to what [Trump] is doing is absolutely --I find ... immoral. But the fact is that look, we should notbe locking people up.We should make sure we changethe circumstance as we did -- whythey would leave in the firstplace. And those who come seeking asylum,we should immediately have the capacity to absorb them [and] keep them safe until they can be heard.
Look, I just think we got a lot of really good candidates out there and they're making their case and I don't, I don't put a whole lot in terms of labels, i'm not going to comment on Bernie's characterization of who or what it is. Bernie Sanders's sincere about what Bernie Sanders, what Bernie Sanders thinks and I think Bernie Sanders should go out and say it.
If we give Donald Trump eight years in the White House, Donald Trump will forever and fundamentally alter the character of this nation, who we are and I can not stand by and watch that happen, the core values of this nation, our standing in the world, our very democracy, everything that has made America America's at stake.
( Trump) said there were quote some' very fine people' on both sides, with those words, the President of the United States assigned a moral equivalence between those spreading hate and those with the courage to stand against it. And in that moment, I knew the threat to this nation was unlike any I had ever seen in my lifetime.
The fact of the matter is, the vast majority of the members of the Democratic Party are still basically liberal to moderate Democrats in the traditional sense, show me the really left -, left -, left-wingers who beat a Republican. So the idea that the Democratic Party has kind of stood on its head, I don't get.
In my career, Ive always tried to make a human connection. That is my responsibility, I think, i shake hands, I hug people. I grab men and women by the shoulders and say, You can do this. Now its about taking selfies together. You know, social norms have begun to change. They have shifted, and the boundaries of protecting personal space have been reset, and I get it. I get it. I hear what they are saying. I understand it. And I will be much more mindful. That is my responsibility. It is my responsibility and I will meet it.
In my career, Ive always tried to make a human connection, thats my responsibility, I think. I shake hands, I hug people, I grab men and women by the shoulders and say you can do this. And whether theyre women, men, young, old, its the way Ive always been. Its the way Ive tried to show I care about them and Im listening.
In my many years on the campaign trail and in public life, I have offered countless handshakes, hugs, expressions of affection, support and comfort, and not once -- never -- did I believe I acted inappropriately. If it is suggested I did so, I will listen respectfully. But it was never my intention.
Donald Trump has turned Donald Trump back on the very people Donald Trump promised to help. Remember how Donald Trump was going to help the middle class, the cops, the firefighters, construction workers, auto workers, farmers, teachers, home health care workers... so many folks in places like Delaware, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Michigan, Wisconsin who have been whipsawed by changing world economy and left behind draconian policies of this administration, everybody knows who Donald Trump is. We've got to be clear who we are, who we are. We've got to understand that we Democrats, we choose hope over fear. We choose unity over division and we choose truth over lies.
Our journey as a family — yes, including my own difficulties with my marriage — have made us unbreakable. It isn't, of course, that we don't suffer. We do. The point is that we don't give up, no matter how much we suffer, so, you ask me, whether my father might not run for President because of reports about me in the news. What you fail to realize, in asking such a question, is that my father has always been proud of me — whether when I was volunteering for the Jesuits, or working as a lawyer. And he remains proud of me today. He loves me. And he loves the American people far too much to let any form of adversity stand in the way of service.
So, you ask me, whether my father might not run for President because of reports about me in the news. What you fail to realize, in asking such a question, is that my father has always been proud of me — whether when I was volunteering for the Jesuits, or working as a lawyer, and he remains proud of me today. He loves me. And he loves the American people far too much to let any form of adversity stand in the way of service.
The important aspect of my complicated divorce( like all divorces) and an equally complicated life, marked by the tragic loss of my mother, sister and brother is this : My father has been a constant source of love and strength in my life, even though my life has been played out in the media, because I am a Joe Biden, my father never once suggested that the family's public profile should be my priority. The priority has always been clear for my dad, as it is, now, for me : Never run from a struggle. Love people and find a way to love yourself. And remember that the two things are very much connected.
I want to be able to, when my life is finished, be able to say to Former Vice President Joe Biden that I kept my commitment to Beau, that I didn't walk away, that I stayed engaged in all the issues that have animated my life my whole life, i want to spend as much time as I can with my family. I have five grandchildren who adore me.
I've had the chance to know Abby for the past 11 years, way back from the days she was organizing volunteers in Iowa in 2007, during her time as a State Representative the last 4 years, she has stood up with courage and passion for working families across the state and I can't wait to see her work for a better tomorrow for our country.
A lot of you have been through a lot tougher times than I and you know when you lose a son or a daughter. It takes some time for the family to sort of be there. We're working through it, i know Beau would want me to run, but honest answer is no man or woman should ask for your vote for president unless they with all your heart and soul can look you in the eye and say' I promise you all my effort, all my attention, all, all my heart, all of my soul,'.
They have a very different view of our relationship with Europe, and although there's a lot of changes we have to make in that world order to accommodate the changes that have taken place in the last 70 years, we believe very strongly at the Biden Institute that it's not to throw out, throw out the liberal world order, the worst thing in the world we can have is this new naked nationalism America first. I believe making America first, in the way we're doing it, will make America last.
I think you're going to see a significant change in the politics of the country, and I think lot of it had to do with the way in which the administration has treated people, i think the nail that maybe have put in the coffin this time was the way in which the administration responded to John McCain death, and the way it came across as being so nakedly... almost un-American. It was just raw. It wasn't -- it's not who we are.
It wasn't about politics with Senator John McCain, senator John McCain could disagree on substance, but the underlying values that animated everything John did, everything Senator John McCain was, come to a different conclusion. Senator John McCain'd part company with you if you lacked the basic values of decency, respect, knowing this project is bigger than yourself.
This party, our nation will be making a tragic mistake if we walk away or attempt to undo the Obama legacy, the American people have worked too hard and we've come too far for The American people. Democrats should not only defend this record and protect this record, The American people should run on the record.
I believe that we have to end the divisive partisan politics that is ripping this country apart, and I think we can, it's mean-spirited, it's petty, and it's gone on for much too long. I don't believe, like some do, that it's naive to talk to Republicans. I don't think we should look at Republicans as our enemies. They are our opposition. They're not our enemies.
I think it plays to his strengths already, in that he is a fairly empathetic figure and he seems very likeable. The tragedy he has gone through only highlights that, but it will be a very short run. While people will obviously be very sympathetic to him because of it, I don't imagine many people's votes will change because of it.
For the rest of our life -- my sisters and my brother -- my dad never failed to remind us that a job is about a lot more than a paycheck. It's about your dignity. It's about respect. It's about your place in the community, you never quit on America. And you deserve a president who will never quit on you.
I don't think any man or woman should run for president unless number 1, they know exactly why they would want to be president and number 2, they can look folks out there and sayI promise Stephen Colbert, Stephen Colbert have my whole heart, my whole soul, my energy, and my passion to do this, and I'd be lying if I said that I knew I was there.
Somalis have made my city of Wilmington, Delaware, [their home] on a smaller scale. There is a large, very identifiable Somali community, i might add if you ever come to the train station with me you’ll notice I have great relationships with them because there’s an awful lot driving cabs and are friends of mine. For real. I’m not being solicitous. I’m being serious.
President Putin continues to call for new peace plans as his troops roll through the Ukrainian countryside and he absolutely ignores every agreement that his country has signed in the past and he has signed recently, we, the United States, and Europe as a whole, have to stand with Ukraine at this moment. Ukraine needs our financial assistance and support as it pursues reforms and even in the face, in the face of this military onslaught.
