Quotes from the news wire:
As Secretary of Defense, I will also not hesitate to take any additional measures necessary to safeguard our nation’s secrets, accordingly, I am directing the Under Secretary of Defense for Intelligence and Security to conduct a review of our intelligence access, accountability and control procedures within the Department to inform our efforts to prevent this kind of incident from happening again.
Over the past year, Russia’s military cooperation with Iran has deepened. and that poses serious challenges for this region and for the safety of your citizens, iran is gaining important battlefield expertise and experience in Ukraine that will eventually transfer to its dangerous proxies in the Middle East.
I think the things that we’re doing, the capability that we’re providing – again, capability, not just a platform – the capabilities that we’re providing I think will enable the Ukrainians begin to change the dynamics on the battlefield, and so rather than having a stalemate, what you’ll probably see is Ukrainians shaping this fight so they can create opportunities for themselves and exploit those opportunities going forward.

One of our goals has been to limit Russia's ability to do something like this again, as Defense Lloyd Austin said. That's why we are arming the Ukrainians with weapons and equipment to defend themselves from Russian attacks, and it's why we are using sanctions and export controls that are directly targeted at Russia's defense industry to undercut Russia's economic and military power to threaten and attack its neighbors.
I think if a chemical or biological weapon was used, you would see a significant reaction from not only the United States, but also the global community, i think what we've seen from the Russians in the past is they're raising issues and creating a pretext so that if they did something in the battle space, they could blame it on somebody else, either Ukrainians or us, NATO.
The overwhelming majority of the men and women of the Department of Defense serve this country with honor and integrity, we owe the men and women of the Department of Defense an environment free of extremist activities, and we owe our country a military that reflects the founding values of our democracy.
The American people deserve to know that we take this issue very seriously. And that we are committed to protecting civilians and getting this right both in terms of how we execute missions on their behalf and how we talk about them afterwards, and I recognize that and I’m committed to doing this in full partnership with our military leaders.
We remain committed to this region. We still have tens of thousands of troops in this region. We have significant capability here, as a person who has fought here for a number of years, defending interests in this region, let me assure you that we are not going to abandon those interests going forward.
We've created a new tool kit that will help leaders identify service members who are struggling and connect service members and their families to resources and support programs, i've also directed the undersecretary Defense for Personnel and Readiness to develop a strategy and implementation roadmap within 90 days to strengthen food security across the force.
Now, the steps outlined in today's memo won't solve all the economic worries that our military families face. But they are important steps, and we're committed to getting this right, our men and women in uniform and their families have enough to worry about basic necessities like food and housing shouldn't be among them.
Retaining Bagram would have required putting as many as five thousand U.S. troops in harm's way, just to operate and defend it. And Retaining Bagram would have contributed little to the mission that we had been assigned, and that was to protect and defend our embassy which was some 30 miles away, staying at Bagram -- even for counter - terrorism purposes -- meant staying at war in Afghanistan, something that the President made clear that he would not do.
We now know that there was no connection between Zemari Ahmadi Zemari Ahmadi and ISIS-Khorasan, that Zemari Ahmadi activities on that day were completely harmless and not at all related to the imminent threat we believed we faced, and that Zemari Ahmadi was just as innocent a victim as were the others tragically killed.
This fallen officer died in the line of duty, helping protect the tens of thousands of people who work in — and who visit — the Pentagon on a daily basis, this tragic death today is a stark reminder of the dangers they face and the sacrifices they make. We are forever grateful for that service and the courage with which it is rendered.
Very little surprises me anymore, as I continue to consider just how focused it seems that the Defense Department is on routing out White extremism and White supremacy in the services right now, i'm not sure exactly how it is that you are able to tell from search terms that much about the individuals that are serving in uniform.
Diversity, equity and inclusion is important to this military and it will be important in the future, this is not about diversity, this is about a very specific kind of anti-American indoctrination that is seeping into some parts of our military based on the whistleblower complaints we have received.
We represent the United States of America. We ought to look like America, and not only in the ranks, i think we're doing a great job in terms of recruiting the right kinds of people, providing access to people from every corner, every walk of life in this country. As long as you're, as you're, you're fit and you can qualify, there's a place for you on this team.
We'll be working even more closely with our friends in the Indo-Pacific and elsewhere -- particularly in Europe -- to strengthen a rules-based international order that favors the advance of freedom, our allies, as I've said, are a force multiplier and a strategic advantage that none of our competitors can match.
I have directed The Defense Department to use every resource at our disposal, within our authority, to support U.S. interagency efforts to rapidly provide India's frontline healthcare workers with the materials they need. We are currently assessing the equipment we can both procure and draw from our own inventory in the coming days and weeks.
The Department will immediately take appropriate policy actions to prioritize climate change considerations in our activities and risk assessments, to mitigate this driver of insecurity, as a leader in the interagency, the Department of Defense will also support incorporating climate risk analysis into modeling, simulation, war gaming, analysis, and the next National Defense Strategy.
