Quotes from the news wire:
When you’re a gubernatorial candidate, there’s always going to be one type of criticism or another, my focus is on Phil Murphy. And here's one thing I know about all 1.4 million Republicans in New Jersey, none of them want to see Phil Murphy get a second term. It’s my job to get all of us to rally around that very point.
My concern is, am I giving an accurate narrative of what's going on?, there's a range of uncertainty there and we need to convey that. But within that range, the numbers are the numbers. We're trying to get an understanding of why the electorate is moving in the way that it's moving, if at all, and what are the key issues that are driving folks and what are they concerned about.
Part of the reason why people stayed at home (in 2016) was because they really didn't feel strongly that that either candidate was going to change their lives in any meaningful way, even if they liked disliked one candidate more than they dislike the other candidate. In this case, it is a clear decision between Trump and not Trump. And the vast majority of voters are strongly on one side of that line or the other.
The folks that are in the middle, the moderate folks, the White college-educated women living in the suburbs, are looking at what is happening realistically. They're looking at what is happening in their own neighborhoods, whether it's Covid or whether it's the marches in support of Black Lives Matter among their own White neighbors and saying( Donald Trump message) does not comport with how I see the world, and Donald Trump is just trying to divide us, and I think that just builds on top of it.
This is pretty astounding, not only are New Jersey Democrats doing better on the generic House ballot statewide, but the shift is coming almost entirely from districts currently held by the GOP. If these results hold, we could be down to just one or two -- or maybe even zero -- Republican members in the state congressional delegation after November.
