60 Millionen für Phantásien - Wie die 'unendliche Geschichte' ins Kino kam

60 Millionen für Phantásien - Wie die 'unendliche Geschichte' ins Kino kam1984

[Michael Ende is interviewed about the film, which he did not like]

Michael Ende:
Of course, most important, would be to create a Phantasia in that film that shows the world of imagination. But what the film contains from imagination hardly exceeds the standard of an average night club. The interior of the Ivory Tower only misses having a mirror ball and a girl group to put the audience in a night club. All that should have been mysterious and magical is totally flat and banal. The Ivory Tower itself is shown as a sort of TV tower with three directional antennas. I don't know why. The Sphinxes are quite one of the biggest embarrassments of the film. They are full-bosomed strippers who sit there in the desert. Perfect orgies of kitsch celebrate in the last part of the film. In her chamber, the Childlike Empress sits on a back-stitched Hollywood bed including a mussel shell in the background. It's unspeakable; it became an unspeakable story.
