Quotes from the news wire:
They were kidnapped from their home. They were transported hundreds of miles from there not really sure where they went. And they came to this place of horror, some to die, many to starve and be tortured. Women to be raped before they were then forcibly taken on a journey thousands of miles from their home to be sold by so-called merchants and taken to the Americas to the Caribbean to be an enslaved people.
The descendants of the people who walk through that door were strong people, proud people, people have of deep faith. People who love their families, their traditions, their culture, and carried that innate being with them through all of these periods, went on to fight for civil rights, fight for justice in the United States of America and around the world. And all of us, regardless of your background, have benefited from their struggle and their fight for freedom and for justice.
When we first came into office, the first bill we proposed was for a pathway to citizenship, was to fix a broken immigration system that was broken under the previous administration, participate in the solution because we are offering solutions.

So as we gather here, votes are still being counted. But it is clear, your work sent a message to the entire world. Our democracy is intact. And when democracy is intact, this is what it looks like, here's the thing. Some Democrats won and some Republicans won. That is what happens when more than one hundred million Americans participate and vote in free and fair and open elections.
And so, understand when we talk about democracy is on the ballot, it is.And the nature of democracy is such that I think there’s a duality, on the one hand, there’s an incredible amount of strength when a democracy is intact, in terms of what it can give its people to protect and fight for their individual rights and freedoms. In that way, it can have great strength in lifting people up.
We’re talking about people who are fleeing great harm, they've fled great harm and they are seeking refuge. And talk about pol theater, playing games with people's lives. There are mothers with sleeping babies getting off those buses.

I think that there is no question that we have to do what the president and I asked Congress to do, the first request we made: pass a bill to create a pathway to citizenship, the border is secure, but we also have a broken immigration system, in particular, over the last four years before we came in, and it needs to be fixed.
When I began work on the root causes of migration from northern Central America, I approached the task with a few basic principles: one, my belief — I think our shared belief — that people don’t want to leave home, and when they do, it is usually for one of two reasons: They are fleeing harm, or they cannot address the basic needs of themselves or their family.
Rohini Kosoglu is a brilliant and trusted leader who has been at my side for years from the US Senate to the campaign trail to the White House. Rohini Kosoglu has brought vision, strategic judgment, and a depth of experience as our administration has addressed some of the most urgent challenges facing our nation. Rohini Kosoglu is an exceptional public servant and I am enormously grateful for Rohini Kosoglu service. Rohini Kosoglu will remain a valued advisor and friend.
I think that what is most important right now is that we ensure that the restrictions that the states are trying to put up that would prohibit a woman from exercising what we still maintain is her right, that we do everything we can to empower women to not only seek but to receive the care where it is available, is federal land one of those options?
Vice President Kamala Harris have the power to elect leaders who will defend and protect Vice President Kamala Harris rights. And as the president said earlier today, with Vice President Kamala Harris vote, Vice President Kamala Harris can act, and Vice President Kamala Harris have the final word. So this is not over.
First, I do believe most people don't want to leave home. They don't want to leave their grandmother. They don't want to leave the place where they worship and the community that they've always known, and so, when they do, it is usually for one of two reasons: They are fleeing harm, or to stay means they simply cannot satisfy their basic needs or the needs of their family.
So, these are the guiding principles that inform our Root Causes Strategy. And this strategy is aligned with the importance that many of the leaders here know and live -- the importance of paying attention to a good return on investment, consistency and predictability, a skilled workforce, and a reliable infrastructure.
In Kamala Harris and her husband country, we have to recognize that we may very well be experiencing an epidemic of hate toward so many Americans that is wrong, we should interpret as being hate against all of us, as a nation. We are a nation that prides itself on our diversity as an element of our strength.
We also recognize just as it has been in the United States, for Jamaica, one of the issues that has been presented as an issue that is economic in the way of its impact has been the pandemic, so to that end, we are announcing today also that we will assist Jamaica in COVID recovery by assisting in terms of the recovery efforts in Jamaica that have been essential to, I believe, what is necessary to strengthen not only the issue of public health but also the economy.
It is time for us to do what we have been doing. And that time is every day. Every day it is time for us to agree that there are things and tools that are available to us, ukraine is a country in Europe. It exists next to another country called Russia. Russia is a bigger country. Russia is a powerful country. Russia decided to invade a smaller country called Ukraine. So basically, that's wrong.
I have more questions: Chicago, what happened with Kim Foxx and that prosecutor? The D.A.'s team? What was going on there? I have so many questions and was Jussie Smollett involved in any way in perpetrating something bigger, something was that was like a woke moment gone awry? We don’t know, and we may never know. But it bears asking the questions because the tax dollars were spent, and we as a public were manipulated.
Imagine a future : The freight trucks that deliver bread and milk to our grocery store shelves and the buses that take children to school and parents -- all the heavy-duty vehicles that keep our supply lines strong and our economy to grow -- imagine that they produce zero emissions, we are all in the midst of a turning point.
I can say with absolute certainty : If Russia further invades Ukraine, United States together with our allies and partners will impose significant and unprecedented economic costs, we will impose far-reaching financial sanctions and export controls. We will target Russia's financial institutions and key industries. And we will target those who are complicit and those who aid and abet this unprovoked invasion.
It's not a solution to the problem at hand, which is that right now in the United States of America, we need federal laws that guarantee the freedom and right of every American to have access to the ballot to be able to vote, the John Lewis Voting Rights Act, the Freedom to Vote Act address that issue.
I think it's a mistake to try and think about this only through the lens of Democrats versus Democrats when the fact is Republicans are consistently and unanimously standing in the way of progress, so, let's put the emphasis where it really needs to be, which is how is it that today and in this year of our Lord 2021 in America and on some basic issues like upholding our democracy, we can't get bipartisan support.
I love people, and there’s so much that we are doing that is directly impacting and with the people in mind, and I have always felt that my responsibility as an elected leader is to go to the people, especially when their needs must be addressed, and they must know that they are being seen and being heard.
We are breaking records of the number of people that are contracting, a deadly virus, and this administration fails to take personal responsibility or responsibility in terms of leading the nation through this dangerous, dangerous and deadly mass casualty event, and that's why President Donald Trump have forfeited President Donald Trump right to a second term in office.

If past is prologue, they will not, they'll be muzzled, they'll be suppressed, they will be sidelined, because Donald Trump's looking at an election coming up, in less than 60 days, and Donald Trump's grasping for whatever Donald Trump can get to pretend Donald Trump has been a leader on this issue, when Donald Trump is not.
I don't think that most reasonable people who are paying attention to the facts would dispute that there are racial disparities and a system that has engaged in racism in terms of how the laws have been enforced, it does us no good to deny that. Let's just deal with it. Let's be honest. These might be difficult conversations for some, but they're not difficult conversations for leaders, not for real leaders.
Were at an inflection point. The constant chaos leaves us adrift. The incompetence makes us feel afraid, the callousness makes us feel alone. Its a lot. And heres the thing : We can do better and deserve so much more. We must elect a president who will bring something different, something better, and do the important work. A president who will bring all of us togetherBlack, White, Latino, Asian, Indigenousto achieve the future we collectively want. We must elect Joe Biden.
He would take walks every morning along the beach with his buddies who were all retired government officials and they would talk about politics, about how corruption must be fought and about justice, they would laugh and voice opinions and argue, and those conversations, even more than their actions, had such a strong influence on me in terms of learning to be responsible, to be honest, and to have integrity.
I learned quickly that Beau Biden as Delaware was the kind of guy who inspires people to be a better version of themselves. Beau Biden as Delaware really was the best of Jill Biden. And I would ask Beau Biden as Delaware, where'd you get that, where'd this come from, Beau Biden as Delaware'd always talk about Beau Biden as Delaware dad, the love that they shared was incredible to watch. It was the most beautiful display between a father and a son.
I'm not gon na tell Joe Biden what to do, i want Joe Biden what to do to pick the running mate that The Biden campaign is best equipped to help Joe Biden what to do win because more than anything Joe Biden what to do has got to win, we can not suffer another four years of Donald Trump in White House.
Guaranteeing six months of paid leave will bring us closer to economic justice for workers and ensures newborn children or children who are sick can get the care they need from a parent without thrusting Paid Family and Medical into upheaval, to give all children in America the opportunities they deserve, this comprehensive children's agenda will protect their rights, ensure they have access to health care and high-quality education, and dramatically reduce child poverty.
People with PTSD tend to act out. They tend to self-medicate. Which means they're going to be on drugs or they may be an alcoholic. And then they're going to get into fights and they have a really short fuse. And guess what happens ? All of a sudden you don't qualify for VA. That's wrong because again we are not taking into account the way we have designed or enforcing the system the realities of that person's life. It's backwards !
He just does not have the ability to really have a sense of empathy for people who are enduring hardship and enduring pain, the fact that, as you said, he is playing golf while this is happening is not surprising. It's not surprising, but it certainly is not reflective of the leadership that a president should provide in these moments of great tragedy.
Gabbard said. Sen. Michael Bennet, D-Colo., also called out Harris on her health care plan: Senator Harris is my friend as well, but I have to say if we cant admit tonight whats in the plan, which is banning employer-based insurance, were not going to be able to admit that when Donald Trump is accusing Democrats of doing that as well.
We will allow private insurers to offer Medicare plans as part of this system that adhere to strict Medicare requirements on costs and benefits, medicare will set the rules of the road for these plans, including price and quality, and private insurance companies will play by those rules, not the other way around.
The California senator needs to go back where The California senator came from and leave that office and so that's why I'm running with the intention of making sure there will not be four more years, i don't think that we can survive having a President of the United States who uses whatever voice The California senator has in a way that is about dividing and fueling hate in our country.
As it relates to private insurance, there will still be supplemental insurance, but yeah, transitioning into Medicare for All will at some point reduce the requirement for insurance because everyone will have access to health care, under... my vision of Medicare for All, people will have covered what they don't now in terms of vision care, dental care, hearing aids.
The fight of black women has always been fueled and grounded in faith and in the belief in what is possible, we have always built the future that we can see, and believe in, and fight for. It's why Sojourner spoke. It's why Mae flew. It's why Rosa and Claudette sat. It's why Maya wrote. It's why Fannie organized. It's why Shirley ran. And why I stand here as a candidate for President of the United States.
When our kids want to go to college, where as other families who own their home and can go into the equity in their home to help pay for their students' tuition, our families have to go and those students have to take out loans and at interest rates that they can't afford to pay off over a long period of time.
It was hurtful to hear you talk about the reputations of two United States senators who built United States reputations and career on the segregation of race in this country. United States was not only that, but you also worked with United States to oppose busing, and you know, there was a little girl in California who was part of the second class to integrate her public schools, and she was bused to school every day. And that little girl was me.
I do not believe you are a racist and I agree with you when you commit yourself to the importance of finding common ground, but I also believe and it's personal and it was hurtful to hear you talk about the reputations of two United States senator who is built their reputations and career on the segregation of race in this country.
There was a little girl in California who was part of the second class to integrate her public schools and she was bused to school every day, that little girl was me. So, I will tell you that on this subject, it can not be an intellectual debate among Democrats. We have to take it seriously. We have to act swiftly.
I do not believe you are a racist. And I agree with you when you commit yourself to the importance of finding common ground, but I also believe - and it's personal and it was hurtful to hear you talk about the reputations of two United States senators who built their reputations and career on the segregation of race in this country.
Vice President Biden, I do not believe you are a racist, and I agree with you, when you commit yourself to the importance of finding common ground. But I also believe -- and it's personal -- it was actually hurtful to hear you talk about the reputations of two United States senators who built their reputations and career on the segregation of race in this country.
Here's the thing, there are states that keep passing these laws, so, when elected, I'm going to put in place and require that states that have a history of passing legislation that is designed to prevent or limit a woman's access to reproductive health care, those laws have to come before my Department of Justice for a review.
I believe that what was absolutely enlightening -- and should be deeply troubling to the entire American public -- is that he made a decision and didn't review the evidence, no prosecutor worth her salt would make a decision about whether the president of the United States was involved in obstruction of justice without reviewing the evidence.
We are being offered a false choice, you're either in favor of the Second Amendment or you want to take everyone's guns away. It's a false choice that is born out of a lack of courage from leaders who must recognize and agree that there are some practical solutions to what is a clear problem in our country.
The Russian government came into the house of the American family and manipulated us, we must take this seriously in that context and understand that when we debate as we did in 2016, one of the most important debates that we have, which is who'll be the leader of our country, the Russians exploited our nation's discourse to play into our deepest fear.
We had over 200 years of slavery, we had Jim Crow for almost a century. We had legalized discrimination, segregation and now we have segregation and discrimination that is not legal but still exists and is a barrier to progress. We have disparities around housing. We have disparities around education. We have disparities around income. And we have to recognize that everybody did not start out on an equal footing in this country. And in particular black people have not.
It's very important that anyone who presents themselves as a leader and wants to be a leader will speak like a leader, that means speaking with integrity. It means speaking truth. It means speaking in a way that expresses and indicates some level of interest and concern to people other than oneself. And so, right there we will see a great contrast.
We are a diverse country, yes, and some people would suggest that in diversity, when there is a diverse population, one can not achieve unity, i reject that notion, because this is my belief : Yes, we are diverse and we have so much more in common than what separates us. And when we emphasize that commonality... we will achieve greater unity. And in particular greater unity than we have right now, when there are so many powerful voices who are trying to sow hate and division among us.
California Sen. Kamala Harris are sitting here before members of Senate Judiciary Committee because California Sen. Kamala Harris had the courage to come forward, because as California Sen. We need this administration to understand that if they care about the opioid crisis in rural America as they say they do, they have also got to care about the drug-addicted young man in Chicago or East LA.
