Quotes from the news wire:
Unceremoniously abandoning these neighborhoods will create barriers to basic needs for thousands of residents, i call on Walmart to ensure that these soon-to-be-closed stores are repurposed with significant community engagement so they can find a new use to serve their neighborhoods.

Obviously, we didn’t win the election today, but I stand here with my head held high and a heart full of gratitude, you will not be defined by how you fall. You will be defined by how hard you work and how much you do for other people.

So much for Chicago’s ‘Welcoming City Ordinance.’ These Democrat elites are absolute hypocrites, and now their hypocrisy is on full display for the entire nation. Governor Pritzker and Mayor Lightfoot have been complaining about a few hundred migrants being bused into self-declared sanctuary city Chicago, then turn around and dump them in the suburbs for Republican mayors to deal with. Instead of complaining about fulfilling their ‘welcoming city’ promises, these Democrat hypocrites should call on President Biden to do his job and secure the border—something the President continues failing to do.
Fundamentally what we can not do is abandon the science. We know that the safest place for kids to be is in-person learning in Chicago Public Schools, and we’ve spent hundreds of millions of dollars to make Chicago Public Schools safe. They are safe. We’ve got the data to demonstrate that. We’ve got to get the teacher’s union to get real and get serious about getting back into in-person learning.
What it gets is they get to try to flex their power, but they do it at the expense of our children, they do it at the expense of our families. We know that when we were fully remote previously, 100,000 of our kids lost contact and would disengage from the system. We saw in the elementary schools the failure rate during remote learning triple from what it was. We saw the trauma and social emotional harm to students across our system.
The Finance Committee today voted unanimously to advance this to The Chicago City Council. The Finance Committee today is $ 2.9 million, and obviously I'm comfortable with The Finance Committee today, but importantly my understanding is Ms. Anjanette Young and Anjanette Young counsel are also comfortable with The Finance Committee today and then The Finance Committee today will go to the The Chicago City Council floor on Wednesday.
We also got to push retailers. Some of the retailers downtown and [on] Michigan Avenue, I will tell you, I'm disappointed that they are not doing more to take safety and make it a priority. For example, we still have retailers that won't institute plans like having security officers in their stores, making sure that they've got cameras that are actually operational, locking up their merchandise at night. Chaining high-end bags, these purses seem to be something that is attracting a lot of attention on these organized retail theft units.

We are going to take significant, swift action to quell any issues, [Saturday night] there were a large number of children that were down at Millennium Park. We followed the protocols that we put in place from the summer of 2020. When it was time for them to leave the park, we made sure they left the park without incident.
At almost every single point in our city's history, racism has taken a devastating toll on the health and well-being of our residents of color – especially those who are Black, without formally acknowledging this detrimental impact, we will never be able to move forward as a city and fully provide our communities with the resources they need to live happy and healthy lives.
President Catanzara has time and again deliberately misled our police officers by lying about the requirements of the policy and falsely claiming that there will be no repercussions if officers are insubordinate and refuse to follow a City and Department directive or order, catanzara is encouraging an unlawful strike and work stoppage which carries the potential to undermine public safety and expose our residents to irreparable harm, particularly during an ongoing pandemic.
Officer French is making small but positive progress, given what we feared on Saturday night, Officer French is getting great care, Officer French's surrounded by a family that's loving and praying on Officer French, and a lot of colleagues who are pulling for Officer French recovery, and Officer French is making some incremental progress.
We checked with [attendees] every single day, multiple times a day. We had our people at the screening checkpoints, every single day, they turned hundreds of people away, either who didn’t have the right paperwork or had an expired test that wasn’t [taken] within 72 hours. That tells me there is a rigor around the protocols that they were using to screen people.
There has been and will continue to be skepticism. Is this real? Are you just doing this for the cameras? No, it's real. And we're going to continue to be here rain or shine because I know that if we can change the fortunes of this neighborhood, we can do it anywhere in the city, we will move as fast as the trust builds.
We need gun trafficking multi-jurisdictional strike forces to disrupt the flow of illegal guns that are coming into our city, i and other mayors across the country have been beating this drum since day 1 of President Joe Biden for assistance presidency. ... My expectation is that those strike forces will be at work here shortly.
You tell them that you have these really restrictive gun laws where people can’t get guns to defend themselves, criminals would rather go and buy guns out of state and then commit crimes where the gun laws are really restrictive because no one else can protect themselves -- and yet liberals still think they are making an argument for gun control.
Here in Chicago, the word' Lollapalooza' has always been synonymous with summer, great music and four days of unforgettable fun -- which made last year's decision to postpone it all the more difficult, now, less than a year later and armed with a vaccine that is safe, effective and widely available, we are able to bring back one of our city's most iconic summer music festivals.
I understand, having investigated many of these shootings, that officers are in many instances called upon to make split second decisions, particularly in instances like this one where there's a gun, nonetheless, a traffic accident, a traffic incident should not result in the death of anyone. So, we have more work to do to be sure.
Let’s be clear. An adult put a gun in a child’s hand. A young and impressionable child. And one who should not have been provided with lethal force. A weapon that could and did irreparably change the course of his life, this happens way too often in our city. And it’s way past time for us to say, ‘no more.’.
None of this is easy. The uncertainty and risk our educators, our students and our families confront all take a toll.

If those agents are here to actually work in partnership and support of gun violence and violent cases, plugging into existing infrastructure of federal agents, not trying to play police in our streets, then that's something different, but the proof is going to be in the pudding. It's too soon to say if this is a value add or not.
I have great concerns about that particularly given the track record in the city of Portland. I spent a lot of time yesterday talking with the mayor or Portland to get a sense of what has happened there. We don't need federal agents without any insignia taking people off the streets and holding them, I think, unlawfully. That's not what we need.
They need to stop beautifying Lake Shore Drive and do something for these people. Lake Shore Drive is beautiful enough. [W]hat we need is for the union to come back to the table to bargain in good faith, spend the time actually getting a deal done, face to face with us, and not off to the side in a caucus.
It wasn't a playground, it was a park. It wasn't seven dead. It wasn't 52 wounded in one incident, which is what this suggests. And it's misleading, it's important when we're talking about people's lives to actually get the facts correct, which one can easily do if you actually cared about getting it right.
